Double A Appaloosas is situated 65km north of Christchurch, nestled on the north east slopes of Mount Grey above the North Canterbury town of Amberley 12.5 km to the east.
The property is medium to rolling hills with the odd steeper paddock, ideal for developing strength and muscle tone in the young horse, and although within the drought prone North Canterbury area, the property is situated up a valley known for its ability to hold on in the summer months. Apart from the Appaloosas and the cats, dogs, pet lamb, pet calf, and chickens, David and Lynne also farm cattle for beef.
David and Lynne Adkins have been here for 15 years and during that time have established Double A Appaloosas as a vehicle for their passion of the breed which is based on breeding programme without outcross, basically this is using the ApHANZ grading system of breeding Appaloosa to Appaloosa on both the sire and dam side for six generations.
The grading system starts with an “F” or foundation, then on to “D”, “C”, “B”, “A”, then the ultimate of “AA”.
Overriding the programme apart from confirmation, type, colour, etc. is nature, David and Lynne are committed to producing a horse that the Nez Perce Indians enjoyed, a horse that would partner, bond, and work with its rider rather than fight, those who have had anything to do with the Double A horses would agree that these animals are extremely quiet, willing, and loving in nature.
Both David and Lynne are active in the showing and equine community and between them have held office in both ApHANZ (Appaloosa Horse Association of New Zealand) and CADRAC (Canterbury and Districts Regional Appaloosa Club)
David and Lynne are happy to take enquiry and for any prearranged visits, if you find yourself in the area, give them a call, they would be happy to see you.
